Theo Beutinger GmbH offers an all-round service in the areas of painting and lettering. The medium-sized company’s services include car painting, industrial painting, spot repair work, accident repairs and lettering of all kinds.
Exemplary performance in the area of environmental protection and occupational safety
The company’s commitment demonstrates a coherent concept in the areas of environmental protection and occupational safety. Only solvent-free and low-solvent materials are used for painting. The company ensures that the product cycle is as closed as possible; for example, used solvents are collected for recycling or distilled and reused in-house.
Comprehensive energy concept
The company is a role model when it comes to implementing technical measures to save energy. A comprehensive energy concept was drawn up and implemented in 2013. Since then, the company has relied on a gas-powered combined heat and power unit (CHP) in combination with a photovoltaic system to cover process and room heating. The thermal energy generated is used in the drying and painting booths as well as in the other operating and office rooms. The electrical energy generated is used in operation. As a result,CO2 emissions have been reduced by around 50 percent.
The systematic recording of energy consumption forms the basis for a continuous increase in energy efficiency and an associated reduction in the company’s energy consumption.

Holistic energy optimization with CHP
Theo Beutinger, owner and managing director of the paint store of the same name in Bad Saulgau, has completely restructured his business in terms of energy. Together with SEHON Lackieranlagen, Gechingen, not only were the existing painting systems and dryers energy-optimized, but the entire operation was also brought up to the latest energy standards by integrating a CHP unit.
The results are impressive: The energy costs of the entire paint store have been reduced by around 50% compared to previous years. Thanks to intelligent control, the company covers around 70 % of its own electricity requirements from its own CHP (combined heat and power plant), i.e. through combined heat and power generation.
As a rule, electricity from power stations comes out of the socket with an efficiency of 40 %, while 60 % of the energy originally used is uselessly released into the environment via cooling towers. The electricity from the CHP unit at Theo Beutinger is generated in a process with over 90 % efficiency.
The life cycle assessment at Theo Beutinger is correspondingly excellent: thanks to the holistic concept, this means around 75% fewer CO-2 emissions and around 66% less primary energy consumption.
The integration of a CHP unit was an important module in the green technology concept for the overall energy modernization of the company. According to Tiemo Sehon, owner and Managing Director of SEHON Lackieranlagen, a complex, intelligently coordinated overall package was put in place for the company: “As far as I know, we were the first paint shop manufacturer in Germany to plan such a complex energy modernization with a CHP unit and successfully put it into practice for a paint store.”
First of all, the two existing painting systems from Beutinger were upgraded by SEHON to the latest energy-optimized standard. To this end, the two paint shops were equipped with modern SE-ÖcoConnect control technology, which enables the optimum interaction of heat generators, air volume control, operating mode control and the use of renewable energy from combined heat and power generation in existing paint shops and dryers.
At the same time, the systems were modernized with SE-Öcoplus, a recirculation system developed by SEHON and SE-Airmaster – an intuitive air volume control system and the fully automatic air pressure regulation system SE-Control, as well as other smaller energy optimization modules.
SEHON’s system partner EMIG Energie- und Innovationsmanagement took care of the integration of the appropriate combined heat and power unit. CHP units are particularly suitable for paint stores because paint stores have a year-round heat requirement for painting and drying. This is because combined heat and power plants generate electricity and heat simultaneously in a single process. Electricity can always be generated if heat consumption is also ensured.
Due to the year-round heat requirement in a paint store, year-round electricity production is also guaranteed at times when the company can also consume the self-generated electricity itself. As a result, the costs for heat generation are used to produce electricity almost free of charge, which no longer has to be purchased from outside. The economic benefit of a combined heat and power plant depends on the correct dimensioning and design.
In addition to the energy optimization of the paint shops and the intelligent integration of a CHP unit, the general energy supply at Beutinger was converted from oil to natural gas and the heating of the workshop rooms with heat exchangers. The energy required for this is supplied by the combined heat and power plant, the existing boiler and the gas burners in the paint shops. Thanks to sophisticated control technology, the return temperatures from the painting and drying process of the SEHON systems are used to heat both the workshop and the offices of Beutinger GmbH.
The topic of “heat recovery in painting systems”, which is only becoming increasingly important for many companies today, was successfully implemented by Beutinger with SEHON back in 1993. The protection of natural resources and the conservation of nature and the environment have always been important to Theo Beutinger. An external sign of Theo Beutinger’s environmental awareness is the 26 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof of the company building, which generates its own electricity and feeds surplus power into the grid.
Tiemo Sehon from SEHON Lackieranlagen comments: “With energy costs continuing to rise, energy optimization in a paint store remains the owner’s most important management task. Energy optimization and environmental friendliness are not only good for a company’s image: this is the only way to maintain the company’s profitability and competitiveness. The energy modernization of the entire operation with a CHP unit at Theo Beutinger in Bad Saulgau shows how far we have come with our technology in practice, not only in paint shops and dryers, but in the entire operation to avoid energy, save energy and use energy several times.”
